Romanesque art corresponds to the communal and feudal age, which was characterized by the conflicts between the church and the empire.
The new communal organization was composed of an urban unit and a surrounding castle, but the relationship between the town and country was not the one typical of the Roman Imperial world: there was much more solidarity between urban society and country.
Work was the most important novelty, because it was promoted by the church as moral discipline that would give spiritual salvation to people. In this period, fortresses were very important, because they were used as fortified cathedrals, where citizens met each other under the protection of the bishop in case of invasions.
The cathedral became a complicated functional mechanism, not only for contemplation but also for life.
The itineraries we advise you underline the architecture, sculpture and painting of that time.
