Romanesque entered its richest period around 1050 and lasted well into the 13th century.
Even as innovative engineering was leading to the creation of grandiose Gothic structures, Romanesque continued to thrive in many areas.
The Normans left behind fine examples of Romanesque churches in Apulia (at Bari, Molfetta, Trani, Barletta, Bitonto and Canosa).
The cathedral of Trani represents a wonderful example of Romanesque art in Puglia.
It was built in XII century and ended only half a century later; it has a simple facade over the crypt with a bronze portal made by Borisano da Trani (1180).
We advise you to visit also the historical center with the Romanesque church of St. Giacomo, the Byzantine church of St. Andrea and St. Francesco.
