See Naples and then... come back. Coming back to Naples is a must to discover the endless attractions this extraordinary city can offer and are impossible to admire all at once.
Only to make a few examples, we can mention the Duomo (of Gothic origin), the church and majolica cloister of Santa Chiara and Gesù Nuovo. Also not to be missed is the mysterious fortress of Castel dell'Ovo on the islet of Megaride, and the Palace of Capodimonte built by Charles III of Bourbon, whose collection of antiquities is among the most important in the world. Also underground Naples deserves a visit, with sepulchral tunnels and catacombs, like San Gennaro a Capodimonte. For modern art lovers, we suggest a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art, which hosts, among others, works by Andy Warhol, Mimmo Paladino and Damien Hirst.
A visit to Pompeii is a must, the ancient Roman city covered by ashes from the Vesuvius on 24th August 79 AD: a city perfectly preserved, with its buildings, villas, mosaics, a basilica and a number of temples. The Villa of the Mysteries is renowned for its cycle of paintings representing initiation rites, Dionysian mysteries, frescos and intact furnishing.
After an excursion up the Vesuvius, with its breathtaking sceneries, visitors may continue towards placid Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, moving amidst the scents of its famed lemons and enchanting landscape drawing together the sky, sea and land in one picture of enchanting beauty. And why not take a tour to the fiord of Furore, or through the alleys of Positano, or up to the panoramic terrace of Villa Rufolo at Ravello.
Caserta is well worth a stop, with the Palace of Vanvitelli and the ancient village of Caserta Vecchia.
But Campania offers a number of other marvels, such as Capri and its Blue Cave, Ischia with the Aragonese Castle, and Procida with its lemons. Paestum also deserves attention, one of the major archaeological sites of Europe, enriched by three Doric-style temples, a small amphitheatre and a coastline renowned for its long and pristine beaches. On the way back towards Naples, one could also take some time to visit Pozzuoli and admire the Flavius Amphitheatre, the Temple of Serapis and Rione Terra.
